The road to Rugby World Cup 2011 resumes this weekend with European teams battling to book their place in New Zealand.

Since the global qualifying process kicked off in April 2008 with Cayman Islands versus Trindad and Tobago, 148 matches have been played across six continents and there are just 37 matches to be played before the final four qualifiers for the world’s third-largest sporting event will be known.

In Europe, two direct qualifying places will be determined by the second phase of the six-team European Nations Cup top division, which resumes on February 6 and reaches its climax on March 20.

And with a little over 18 months until Rugby’s showcase event gets under way, just two points separate the top three teams in what has been a particularly competitive European Nations Cup campaign.

Georgia currently lead the way, but Russia (second) and Portugal (third) are snapping at their heels, while Romania, Spain and Germany are also still in contention if results go their way.

With Russia beating Rugby World Cup 2007 participants Portugal 18-14 in Lisbon last year, the return match in Sochi this weekend looks set to be one of the most important in the history of Russian Rugby and one of the most critical in the global qualifying process.
