Google and Sprint Team Up for New NFC Payment System

Posted: 27 May 2011 11:13 AM PDT

Word around the tech blogosphere is that Google and Sprint would introduce a new NFC payment system today, which they say will be given a monicker "Google Wallet." Although both companies have yet to announce anything about it, expect the tech geeks to unleash their online ninja skills.

One reader from Engadget revealed that the WHOIS information for "googlewallet.com" actually leads to Google. The catch is that the domain was created in 2005, when Google Checkout was initially known as Google Wallet. However, instead of displaying a Google error page, the URL is just plain dead, which means that something is up. celebritycombo.com

Good thing we only have a few hours to wait for any sign of confirmation.

Panasonic Revives Sanyo’s Xacti Camcorders

Posted: 27 May 2011 11:11 AM PDT

When Panasonic acquired rival company Sanyo last year, everybody thought it would be the last time we would hear from the latter. Apparently, that is not the case as Panasonic revived Sanyo'sXacti pistol-grip camcorders with three new models, only this time with its own brand on them.  celebritycombo.com

One of the new Panasonic camcorders, the HX-WA10, was previously released by Sanyo last year and now comes with upgraded specs. Formerly called Xacti DMX-CA100/ VPC-CA100, this waterproof 1080p camcorder now has a 16-megapixel sensor. Meanwhile, the HX-DC15 and the HX-DC1 can shoot 1080p video clips, with the former providing 16GB internal memory and 16-megapixel sensor, while the latter can take 14.4-megapixel photos.

There is no mention whether these new Panasonic pistol-grip camcorders would be available outside Japan.

ASUS Unveils Two New Gigantic Graphics Cards

Posted: 27 May 2011 11:08 AM PDT

Little do people know that aside from developing laptops and tablets, ASUS also dabbles in graphics cards. Just recently, ASUS has unveiled two new hardware that would enhance any PC gamer's experience: The MARS II and Matrix GTX 580 (pictured).

The Matrix comes in two versions, Standard and Platinum. Both have 1.5GB or RAM and a huge dual-fan cooling solution that would need three PCI slots to work, which is a lot but at least you do not have to worry about overheating. Meanwhile, the yet-to-be-photographed MARS II has 3GB of RAM, dual-GPU, and is said to be bigger than the Matrix.

Prices and release dates have yet to be announced, but these two will most likely show up at Computex.

Android-Based EVO 2 Game Console Now Available

Posted: 27 May 2011 11:06 AM PDT

There used to be this EVO game console, which supposedly runs on Linux and was shipped to buyers until it was sold out, or so its manufacturer claimed. Now that company, Envizions, is attempting to make its game console relevant with the introduction of the Android-based EVO 2.

The console features an unspecified 1.2GHz Samsung processor, a "modified" Android 2.2 OS, a game controller, and even a TV remote. Envisions even claims that it is planning to add a motion sensor a la Wii/ Kinect by the end of the year, as well as a points system that would let users buy Android games using "EVO tokens." celebritycombo.com

The EVO 2 is expected to cost US$249; whether or not it will ship is still in question. If you are willing to take a chance, you can reserve one for $15 at its online store. Nevertheless, "free" developer units are now available, apart from the annual $149 software support fee.

Hasselblad H4D 200MS Camera Captures 200MP Images

Posted: 27 May 2011 11:02 AM PDT

Hasselblad has recently introduced a new camera that can capture images at a stunning 200MP resolution. This may make those compact digital camera sound puny and small in the process. The comparison may not serve right with the new Hasselblad H4D 200MS Camera.

The new Hasselblad H4D 200MS Digital Camera is able to capture and create 200MP resolution images using the camera's 50MP sensor. This is possible through the multi-shot technology that the digital camera uses to come up with a 200MP, 600MB image. It does so by taking six images of the same object and different minute angles and then stitch them together into a 200MP image. It takes around 30 seconds for the Hasselblad H4D 200MS Camera to do this.

Other features of this camera also include a 50-800 ISO range, automatic Digital Lens Correction, and also the option to take normal shot 50MP images as a normal camera. With such incredible features, the Hasselblad H4D 200MS Camera does not come cheap by any means. It is available at Hasselblad for a whopping US$45,000. That might be a price tag that only the most serious of professional photographers might be willing to pay.

Google Wallet Indeed a Reality

Posted: 27 May 2011 10:59 AM PDT

A few hours after we reported about the possibility of a "Google Wallet" NFC payment system, Google has confirmed its existence in not just one, but two services. Google has partnered with Mastercard, Sprint, and Groupon to let customers pay and receive coupons on the go using their smartphones.

The Google Wallet payment service will be available first on Sprint's Nexus S handset and later on other smartphones (whether it would cover non-Android phones is still a mystery). The service will initially cover San Francisco and New York this summer.

Meanwhile, Google Offers is integrated with the Google Wallet and provides coupons and discounts featured on daily deal site Groupon.com. It will be available in the same markets, as well as in Portland, Oregon. Both services will be free to consumers, with Google garnering its profit from advertisements.

Now that Google has thrown itself into the ring, expect other companies to come up with its own mobile payment services such as Isis by Apple and AT&T.

Although the exterior of the camera is quite subtle on its Disney-esque design, which is a good thing, this Lumix camera is equipped with Mickey Mouse on-and-off screens, icons, and photo frames.

The Lumix Disney camera will hit Japanese retail on June 10 for about US$370. We doubt this will reach stateside, but expect this to become available on specialized online stores that offer Japanese gadgets to buyers outside the Land of the Rising Sun.

Consider When Buying an iPad?

Posted: 27 May 2011 10:55 AM PDT

It has been over a year since the iPad was introduced and since then, this tablet has been one of the hottest gadgets around the world. The problem encountered by first-time iPad buyers, however, is that they get overwhelmed on which version to purchase.

There are six different iPad models, with prices ranging from $500 to $830. The differences lie on connectivity and storage capacity. Three models can only connect to the World Wide Web by WiFi, while the other three include 3G connectivity. Meanwhile, storage capacity vary from 16GB, 32GB, to 64GB. Deciding on which model to pick can be a little complicated, but Wired.com has made it a little easier.

Connectivity – A WiFi-only model is enough for many users, especially if your home has a wireless network already set up. However, those who travel a lot may want to consider having the more expensive 3G-equipped model, just in case you get stuck in a hotel or restaurant that does not have WiFi. Also, the 3G model–which costs $130 more than its corresponding WiFi-only version–includes GPS, making it more reliable for traveling users.

Storage – Users who have purchased the WiFi-only model usually utilized their iPads for media consumption like movies, music, and graphic-intensive games. In that case, larger storage capacities like 32GB and 64GB are recommended, as a 16GB iPad could fill up quite quickly. Meanwhile, 3G users have the added flexibility of accessing their media files through cloud-based apps like Dropbox and Pandora. With that, storage is less important, unless you still insist on storing a lot of music and movies in the flash drive.celebritycombo.com

The iPhone/ iPod Touch factor – If you already own an iPhone or an iPod Touch, having an iPad may seem redundant. Some sneaky individuals may talk to you about tethering an iPhone to an iPad, but be aware that jailbreaking can void your warranty. However, iPod Touch owners may want to take the opportunity to "graduate" to an iPad 3G, as it gives the same benefits blown-up on a bigger screen, and at the same time you still do not have to commit to a monthly contract like you would with an iPhone.
