2011 Cookbook Award Finalists - IACP Announces 2011 Award Finalists

ATLANTA, GA (March 7, 2011) - The International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) today announces the finalists for the 2011 Cookbook Awards, the prestigious honor considered the gold standard for culinary publishing, along with the finalists for the Bert Greene Awards for Food Journalism. All 2011 winners will be revealed and recognized at the Gala Awards ceremony on Thursday, June 2 in Austin, Texas, as part of IACP's annual conference.

IACP Cookbook Awards
Over 500 entries were submitted for consideration, making this year one of the most competitive ever. Fifty-two books in 17 categories were selected as finalists via a rigorous two-tiered judging system by independent panels of food and beverage experts. The stringent procedure has made the IACP Cookbook Awards the industry's most reputable acknowledgement of excellence in cookbook publishing.

"The caliber of books submitted was exceptional as always," said Robin L. Kline, MS, RD, CCP, former chair of IACP Cookbook Awards committee. "It is always gratifying for our committee to have so many notable works to consider, especially this year when we celebrate 25 years of honoring outstanding culinary works."

Over the past 25 years, more than 350 books written by more than 300 authors have won the coveted Cookbook Awards. The list of authors whose books received the award reads like a "Who's Who" of the culinary world from Flo Braker, Dorie Greenspan, Rick Bayless and Jacques Pepin to Patricia Wells, Barbara Kafka, Thomas Keller, Deborah Madison and Julia Child.

"For someone looking to build a culinary library they could do no better than to consult our list of winners. No matter what the area - culinary classics, the best of the American table, kitchen science or baking - there are numerous IACP award-winning titles," said Stella Fong, committee chair.

Cookbook Award categories range from American, Baking: Savory or Sweet, Chefs and Restaurants and Children, Youth and Family to Culinary History, First Book/The Julia Child Award, Food Photography and Styling to Literary Food Writing. Additionally, four awards given for exceptional merit will be announced at the ceremony: Book of the Year, Judges' Choice, the Design Award and the Jane Grigson Award.

IACP members and the general public may vote on the "People's Choice" Cookbook Award by selecting their favorite finalist by April 15. A complete list of 2011 Cookbook Award categories and finalists is below and on the IACP Web site.

IACP Bert Greene Awards for Food Journalism
The IACP Bert Greene Awards celebrate the remarkable work of food writers around the globe who continue the legacy of the nationally acclaimed American writer and past IACP board member Bert Greene.

More than 150 entries were judged by culinary experts using IACP's two-tiered procedure. The awards include six categories: Culinary-Related Blog; Culinary Writing about a Restaurant and/or Chef with or without Recipes; Culinary Writing with Recipes; Culinary Writing without Recipes; Culinary Writing about Beer, Wine and/or Spirits; Culinary Writing that Makes a Difference.

IACP Culinary Classics Awards
For the last 25 years, IACP has honored excellence in cookbook publishing; beginning this year, IACP will also honor culinary works that have become true classics in the field. A panel of judges chose 10 books as finalists that have significantly altered the way we think about food and contributed in a meaningful way to the field of culinary literature. Books dedicated to any food-related subject; document and/or interpret a cuisine, culinary tradition or history; or convey an important culinary sensibility or vision were eligible. The five inaugural winners will be announced in Austin at the Gala. The 10 nominees are listed below and on the IACP Web site.

IACP Awards of Excellence
IACP honors member contributions to the culinary industry through annual Awards of Excellence. Past recipients, recognized for exceptional leadership and expertise, include Chuck Williams, Guiliano Hazan, Nora Pouillon, The Beef Checkoff and Cuisinart. The awards honor the full range of IACP's diverse membership in categories that span from Cooking Teacher of the Year to Corporate Marketing Campaign of the Year. Winners will be announced at the Gala in Austin.

IACP Special Recognition Awards
IACP pays tribute to notable culinary professionals who have made lasting contributions to the culinary industry and/or the association through Special Recognition Awards. Past recipients include such distinguished professionals as Rick Bayless, Julia Child, CCP, Jacques Pépin, CCP, Judith Jones, and Anne Willan, CCP. These winners will be announced in Austin at the Gala.
